Albatros D.Va Smer 1/72 – kickoff

While I am waiting for some tools needed to finish the Fokker D.VIII, I started a new project. This is actually for a group build for one of the Facebook modellers group I participate in – and as such, I wanted this to be a quick and easy build.

The kit is Albatros D.Va from Smer, in 1/72 scale, which is an Eduard rebox for one third of the price – it lacks the entourage of an Eduard kit of course (decals, painting options, detailed instructions etc.), but the plastic is there, the quality is not that bad, and for $7 you can’t really ask for more.

Turns out it won’t be that easy, as the kit includes only a rudimentary cockpit, which will certainly take away from the final result. I don’t want to spend any more money on the build, so – I will try my luck with scratch building – might be tricky in this scale, but hey, if it were easy, everyone would do it!

I will paint the kit in Polish markings – another boring green aircraft!

… without further ado, let’s get started – the first step was to paint the cockpit interior with plywood imitation. The procedure I use is pretty basic, very easy, and actually very effective. Just cover the surface with Tamiya Deck Tan, paint thin lines with oil paint, blend with long strokes, repeat as needed:

Next step – cockpit scratchbuilding!
